Christmas 2009 - Gift Suggestions

This time a year ago, our industry was in a state of shock. The economy was in freefall, the secondary market had crashed, banks were failing and folks were getting laid off left, right and center. It was a scary time, almost unprecedented in the 50 plus years of SBA lending. Not a great backdrop for celebrating the holiday season or anything else for that matter.

And yet, we made it through to see better days. We all saw things improve somewhat as a result of increased demand, government subsidies and the recovery of the secondary market. We haven't fully recovered but things sure seem a lot better now versus then. Nonetheless, many of our colleagues are still unemployed or under employed; a number of lenders are hanging on by a thread; and the regulators and politicians are still whipsawing the lenders.

Last year, many of us probably weren't in the mood for giving or receiving gifts. But what about this year - is it possible that we have grown through these tough times? Do we have a better perspective for what is really important in life and can we bring that perspective to our day to day interaction with each other, our customers, colleagues at the SBA, and other partners including valuable vendors? Let's hope so.

So in that spirit of hope and of Christmas, here are a few tips on gift giving.

  • To your shareholders:
    • Well conceived, properly structured, and carefully documented SBA loan (they should be the most profitable loans in the entire portfolio)
  • To your colleagues:
    • Your best effort, every hour of every work day. They deserve your best.
  • To the SBA:
    • Respect. As government servants, they are not always well understood. Show them we "get" what they do and appreciate them for it.
  • To your family:
    • Time. Work hard at work and "be here now" at home. Don't be on the wrong side of "Cat's in the Cradle". Time is one of the greatest gifts you can give to your spouse, significant other, children and other family.
  • To yourself:
    • Love. Beware of "head trash" and other voices that can beat you up constantly. Be kind to yourself, take time for yourself and you will be able to give of yourself much more readily.

On behalf of your friends at sbaAccess, we want to thank you for all your kind comments this past year. Every week we get many wonderful emails and calls from readers just like you - thanking us for our contribution to the SBA industry. We are humbled and gratified by your feedback and we are encouraged to continue on with confidence. We wish each of you and your families and colleagues the best this marvelous season has to offer: Peace, Joy, and Hope.
